Brunei have bad day in KL The top performers at Asean Schools Games

It was a day to forget for Brunei at the 2nd Asean Schools Games (ASG) in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
After two days of competition, the Sultanate are still awaiting their first medal at the July 12-21 event.
Yesterday started out badly with the national netball team getting hammered 85-7 by Malaysia in their opening match of the five-team tournament.
Over at the track and field events at Malaysia's National Sports Council Stadium, Petricie Lee managed a throw of 26.63 metres in the women's discus throw to finish eighth out of nine contestants.
Subenrat Insaeng of Thailand won the gold after breaking the ASG record with a throw of 42.43m.
The previous record holder was her compatriot, Apichaya Chanu, who threw a distance of 39.64m.
Singapore's Chan Zhi Xuan bagged the silver with a throw of 35.18m and another Thai, Sawitri Thongchao, pocketed the bronze with a throw of 34.37m.
Maziah Mahusin, who was recently selected to represent the country at the 1st Youth Olympic Games in Singapore next month, finished last among six runners in the 400m hurdles with a time of 72.49 seconds.
Le Binh Dinh of Vietnam bagged the gold with a time of 63.07s while Thailand's Chapaporn Panchuai followed in second with a time of 64.26s. Aini Nurazirah Mohd Ali claimed the bronze for Malaysia with a time of 64.55s.
For the women's 100m event, Nur Afiqah Hj Rozaini failed to reach the final after finishing sixth in the semi-finals with a time of 13.92s.
Things weren't looking up for Brunei at the Impian Golf and Country Club in Kajang as well. After winning a bronze medal in the last edition in Thailand, Brunei's hopes of clinching the gold were over as of yesterday.
The men's golf event saw Muhammad Hariz Hasim card a two-day gross score of 159 to place 19th among the 25 golfers.
Bryan Chiew followed in 20th with a score of 168
Mohd Qawim Hj Aslimon carded a 174, Young Ren Wee posted a 175 and Muhd Haqiz Wahodiddin recorded a 192 to round off the table.
Low Khai Jei of Malaysia is leading the event with a total score of 140, which is seven shots ahead of his compatriot Mohd Afif Muhd Razif.
Over at the women's golf event, the Sultanate's golfers rounded the bottom of the 20-team table. Almas Syadzwanie posted a score of 196, Dk Siti Nurmashirriah had a 200, Siti Nora Yusreena Hanifah posted a 204 and Almas Akalilie Kamis carded a 221.
Kelly Tan of Malaysia is leading the pack with a total score of 145. Thailand's Ornnicha Konsunthea follows closely behind with a score of 147 while Lucky Sanastasya of Indonesia has a 148.
The results for swimming could not be obtained as of Press time, but the duo of Amanda Liew Jia Xin and Maria Grace Koh also failed to find themselves a place on the podium.
Thailand are leading the medals table with six gold, four silver and six bronze medals while Indonesia follow in second place with six gold, four silver and one bronze.
Hosts Malaysia round off the top three with a medal haul of four gold, eight silver and four bronze.
The Sultanate has sent a contingent of 81 athletes and 31 officials to compete in seven of the 11 sports on offer in the Malaysian capital.
A total of 106 gold medals in athletics, badminton, basketball, golf, gymnastics, gymrama, hockey, netball, sepak takraw, swimming and volleyball are up for grabs at the 10-day tournament.
